Devil May Care - Review Roundup

Wed, 04/06/2008 - 15:04
A week after it's publication, the latest James Bond novel, Devil May Care by Sebastian Faulks, has received mixed reviews. According to theBookseller.com, the novel "was judged enjoyable by most, but some of the reviewers preferred to highlight its faults". Jeffrey Taylor of the Sunday Express was the most positive reviewer, describing Devil May Care as "a warm-hearted, superbly crafted pastiche and like all good reproductions has its own unique quality . . . the depth of Faulks's research is staggering and relentlessly played back as the precisely judged chapters ease you along". Below is a round-up of comments from some of the reviews: "Smattered with plausible Bondisms" Daily Mail "Superbly crafted pastiche" Sunday Express "Sometimes it all seems a little familiar" Daily Express "Full of lazy errors" Mail on Sunday "A brave effort" Observer "A superficially classic Bond caper" Times "Everything is laboriously spelled out" Financial Times by Golrush007

'Fleming' biopic in the works

Wed, 14/05/2008 - 08:42
According to the LA Times, Leonard DiCaprio has become a producer on 'Fleming', a screenplay by Damian Stevenson about the life of James Bond's creator, Ian Fleming. The current version of the screenplay begins on the eve of Fleming's wedding to Ann Rothermere, which took place shortly before the publication of Casino Royale, followed by flashbacks to Fleming's earlier years with Reuters, and then with Naval Intelligence during World War II. Producer Andrew Lazar pointed out that the aim is not to emulate the Bond films, but rather to show the fascinating way that Fleming's own life "informed the James Bond character". This is not the first production to tell Fleming's story. 1989's, 'Goldeneye' starred Charles Dance as Fleming. Also in 1990 Jason Connery played Fleming in 'The Secret Life of Ian Fleming', and in 2005 'Bondmaker' starred Ben Daniels as Fleming. by Golrush007

Winehouse & Ronson working on 'Bond Theme'

Mon, 28/04/2008 - 19:32
The BBC are reporting that Amy Winehouse and the producer Mark Ronson are collaborating on a Bond Theme, supposedly for Quantum of Solace, although they are apparently working unofficially! Ronson said there are no guarantees the track will be used for Quantum Of Solace as they have not been officially signed up to release the song. "Hopefully it will get used. We're working on it and we'll see happens," the producer told BBC 6 Music. He said it was Winehouse who was first approached about the Bond theme tune. "They asked Amy, and I think Amy said that if she did it, she'd want to do it with me. So hopefully something will come of it," he told the station's Music Week's show. "The demo sounds like a James Bond theme, hopefully. But I don't know if it'll get used." Ronson ends the article mentioning that he hopes to be around for at least 12 more Bond films, so he's got at least 12 more goes at the theme if this piece is not used! by SiCo

Fleming's Goldeneye to Become a Celebrity Resort

Fri, 04/04/2008 - 23:20
Goldeneye, the Jamaica home where Ian Fleming penned all of his James Bond adventures, is about to become the hub of a $120 million celebrity resort.  When completed, the resort will offer 85 homes that will retail from $750,000 to $3 million; two restaurants; a health spa; a deli, supermarket, and watersports center. Chris Blackwell, the founder of Island Records and the current owner of the Goldeneye house and original grounds, says that he is launching the project to create jobs and to benefit the local economy.  "The Jamaican people are the root of my success and I want to give something back," he says. As for the future of James Bond's birthplace, Blackwell says that it is safe.  "I will keep Fleming's house as it is so that people can see the Goldeneye that he wrote in, but," he adds, "the future of this place is as a resort location." by Hardyboy

Only Bond Can Save Pinewood!

Thu, 03/04/2008 - 13:22
He's saved the world countless times, but can James Bond save his home base of Pinewood Shepperton Studios? Thanks to the Hollywood writers' strike that shut down film and television productions around the globe, Pinewood Shepperton suffered £3m in lost revenues for 2007.  The main reason for the hit was the delay in the production of Angels & Demons, the prequel to The DaVinci Code, which was set to be filmed at Pinewood. Quantum of Solace, due to be released in the UK on October 31, will doubtless be a welcome financial windfall for the studio. by Hardyboy
