Chillerama review

Disgusting, repugnant, foul, boundless, filthy, offensive, trashy, immature, unadulterated, sleazy, brilliant.

Have you ever dreamt of a film that contains giant sperm monsters, gay werewolves, horny zombies, a truckload of excrement and Joel David Moore as Adolf Hitler? Sounds like a bad acid trip, doesn't it? Somehow, thanks to the wonderfully warped minds of Adam Green (Hatchet, Frozen), Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2, Knights of Badassdom), Adam Rifkin (Detroit Rock City, Look) and Tim Sullivan (2001 Maniacs), it's not. Well, it probably is, but it's also a horror movie. A very funny horror movie. A very funny horror anthology film to be precise, and one that holds absolutely nothing back. Fuck the grisly shocks of the Grand Guignol. That was for pussies. Chillerama has arrived, equipped with the sole intention of raping your senses into gorily gleeful submission, so sit back and take it and love it, with plenty of popcorn and beer.

Hop aboard the Tasteless Express, where Rifkin blows his load over New York City in a monstrous way in Wadzilla, gay pornstar Brent Corrigan sings, dances and transforms in Sullivan's I Was a Teenage Werebear, Kane Hodder maims and destroys in black and white in Green's The Diary of Anne Frankenstein, and the undead rise in more ways than one in Lynch's Zom-B-Movie.

Four of my favourite film-makers working today set out to create the ultimate drive-in movie experience and they have succeeded. In a nutshell, Chillerama is a lot of fun. Sticky, hairy, decaying, sexy fun. And, in my eyes, that's the best kind of fun that you can have sitting down, so see it.

Stuart O'Connor is the Managing Editor of Screenjabber, the movie review website he co-founded with Neil Davey far too many years ago. He likes all genres, as long as the film is good (although he does enjoy the occasional bad "guilty pleasure"), and drinks way too much coffee.
