There’s been a great deal of controversy coming from the 'revelation' that Somers Town, the new film from This is England’s Shane Meadows, has been financed by Eurostar.
So what? Given that the key methods of movie funding in this country tend to throw money at period dramas, gangster films and films starring Keira Knightley, making movies about interesting human relationships needs to be done through small production companies, self-funding or alternative streams. In the end, given that no one has ever really cared where the money comes from to make movies in a traditional manner, why could it possibly matter whether this film is funded by a rail network? If the film’s good, the film’s good. If not, it’s likely got nothing to do with Eurostar.
