So the old right-winger Stan Smith is back with more shenanigans in all 19 episodes from Season 7 of the show ... a season that includes the 100th episode. Wow, where has the time gone?
If you're not already familiar with American Dad, then you should be – I mean' c'mon, this is the SEVENTH SEASON! It comes from the brilliant Seth MacFarlane, the man responsible for Family Guy. But it's much more grounded in reality than Family Guy is – no flashbacks, no cutaways to pop culture references. Like FG, American Dad is a family-based comedy. But this time the head of that family, Stan Smith, is an ultra-right-wing fanatic who works for the CIA. He has a beautiful wife named Francine (who ranks slightly below GW Bush in his affections), geeky son Steve, ultra-liberal daughter Hayley, alien Roger (rescued from Area 51) and a goldfish named Klaus who used to be a Nazi.
But for many of us, the best character on the show is Stan's CIA boss, Avery Bullock. Voiced by the wonderful Patrick Stewart, Bullock is not quite what you'd expect of the director of a secretive government agency – he's rather liberal, somewhat bizarre (he has a bit of a thing for fat Asian women), is a cocaine addict and he once had an affair with Hayley. ANd it's pretty clear that Stewart has an absolute blast playing him
Highlights of this season include the aforementioned 100th episode, 100AD in which Hayley and boyfriend Jeff elope; Steve being cloned; Steve developing a crush on a friend's sister; Stan learning that his half-brother is a multi-millionaire; and Francine going to work at the CIA. As always, the DVD releases are uncensored, so be prepared for plenty of raw language and a lot of inuendo! However, American Dad is still one of the best comedies on TV today, with sharp writing and clever plots.
EXTRAS ★★★★ A featurette on how much the show's writers and crew love working with Patrick Stewart; deleted scenes on most of the episodes; audio commentaries on selected episodes; a featurette on American Dad at ComicCon 2010.
